The bucket needed a change.
I shifted into visualizing and having to specifically hoped for accomplishments I wanted to fill my 2018. Here are the highlights of the year:
WORD(s) OF THE YEAR: EMBRACE AMBITION
January 8, 2018
A group of Linkedin enthusiasts gathered for the 1st LinkedinLocal Meet-up in Metro Manila, Philippines at a cozy coffee shop in Bonifacio High Street and the gatherings went on every month.

From what was just an idea, The After Six Club was slowly coming into life. We were blessed to have been able to call Clock-in Bonfiacio High Street as the Headquarters of LinkedinLocal BGC Philippines chapter. All that we had in mind was just to have a business registered in order for us to make partnerships legitimate and for us to properly promote the business in the hopes to scale and do much bigger things.

Aside from being a startup founder and developer, I was moonlighting as a Social Media Marketing associate for one of the most reputable Yoga studios in the country. We launched a 30 days New You, New Body, New Lifestyle project and we had almost 60 people who joined the challenged; completely changed by our love for Yoga. It was also the first time I was able to produce (ideation, layout to execution) an ebook worksheet in collaboration with one of our Yoga teachers, Nancy Siy, a vegan advocate and jivamukti yogini.
March 13, 2018
I ditched the speech I prepared and obsessed for a few days for a much impromptu and heartfelt talk. I got invited to speak for World Speech Day on the future of Marketing. This event was momental for me, it was beyond my usual comfort zone and I had to finish my speech in 10 minutes.
From all that I said, I remember I stressed on for us not to forget about human connections, relationships, getting to know one another and essentially, the community we are blessed to have. For us not to be dictated and ruled by technology but rather let us, the consumers, tell the developers what not just the human needs but more so, what the entire world needs.
March 16, 2018
I bid farewell to my last Kids Yoga class session at an international school. I must say, aside from teaching yoga to these happy bunch, I learned more in the process. They taught me the meaning of love, compassion and acceptance in diversity of race and equality. If you ask me, I’d do it over and over again.
March 21, 2018
In preparation for a long month hustle on mounting the first Adulting Starter Pack event, I met the wonderful Relationship Managers (Philippines) of Linkedin and was invited to attend to one of their Human Resources seminars which brought more conversations towards brand employment advocacies and employees as your best influencers.
March 22, 2018
Who would’ve thought in a short span of time by advocating and encouraging more women to #embraceambition, I have been included by #WorldOfWomenAtSM as one of the 30 Empowered Women, enablers of passion and purpose. It was an week-long exhibit shot by HIV advocate and Headshot Clinic, Nicolo Cosme and was mounted at the activity hall of SM Megamall.
March 27, 2018
Our third and biggest #LinkedinLocal gathering commenced following the Women Empowerment theme. We had approximately 120 sign-ups and 60 people arrived for a night filled with insights on the importance on why women should stick together, the strongest tribe there is.
I was interviewed by two amazing contributors of Manila Times and Business Mirror for a profiler. It was this point wherein I witnessed and truly believed on how planting of seeds, persistence and consistency truly bears fruit despite all the hurdles.
This was also the year when we started collaborating and helping other people’s endeavors. Together with a good friend, Carlo Ople, we launched his TV Show on Cignal Tv – Gear Up, provided him a venue for him and his team to interview Technology thought-leaders and game-changers.
We also shot The After Six Club’s first ever video highlighting the principles and values of the group. Featuring leaders of different industries from the corporate and entrepreneurs.
Adulting Starter Pack – The Launch of The After Six Club
Mounted in a month, the greatest challenge the lean team ever got ourselves into. This was the validation on how a community of leaders joined together for a common cause – lifelong learning with the main principle on operating with collaboration over competition mindset and on believing in the magic of making things happen by supporting a common goal – human connection. The event was held at the Amphitheater of Bonifacio High Street. The team garnered 3,000+ sign-ups, over 700 attendees within the 3 days period and was supported also by Linkedin themselves who believed in our cause and advocacy towards supporting one another to grow. We also had the biggest Linkedinlocal gathering of 150 attendees and the first ever outdoor Linkedinlocal in the world.
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever thought to have been invited for a TEDx Talk but it has always been in the bucket.
When I received the invitation from Lyceum University, I felt butterflies in my tummy. Having to think of Simon Sinek and those amazing leaders who presented on TEDx, the pressure? Hot damn, that was something! The theme was appropriate and aligned with my year’s theme #embraceambition, it was a no-brainer for me to finally launch the story on how my ambition and perseverance allowed me to work in one of the most prestigious hotel chains in the world and how my experiences brought me into being the startup founder that I am now. It made me realize that all those experiences made sense as it prepared me for what the future holds.
There’s nothing like supporting other women to grow. And, I’m happy to have been able to support not just Husay Co. a performing arts solutions outfit which enables production professionals and performers to reach their goals and maximize their potential. We seek to empower communities through the performing arts sector by utilizing technology & human experiences as sources of inspiration for social impact; but I was also able to surround myself with the women whom I have worked (and grew up with) with in the past (and present).
Being an Independent Linkedin trainer, the Human Resources arena will always be the best department to speak with.
I was assigned to speak about transformational networking in and out of the workplace to which I was able to discuss and remind our HR’s that they are empowered to make a huge difference with regards to forming the company culture of the workplace they serve and belong; and how we can empower one another towards embracing ambition by supporting team-players towards honing their strengths and fulfilling their interests.
We had an activity about shifting mindsets, reframing the way we communicate and being the head accountability buddy with regards to checking up on everyone’s mental health.
Filled with a powerhouse of thought leaders and champions from different industries in Asia. The room was filled with leaders who runs conglomerates, strategists, analysts and angel investors.
We were able to proudly introduce our business core principles and the roadmap as a young startup and we’re happy to know that business leaders believe in community over competition and in the power of collaboration towards making things happen – hand in hand.
Aside from the pleasant surprise when Franco gave us VIP passes and the fact we met Gary at the backstage; I couldn’t forget the moment when Gary Vaynerchuk said “She’s crushing it on f*cking Linkedin” in front of the crowd.
Plus, I got the fist bump I told myself I’ll ask from him if I bump into him one of these days. Awesome.
On Adulting and Make it Makati
I can finally say, I made it in Makati’s social media sites and I’m proud to have been able to talk about Adulting. I spoke about my first time experience in independent living in the United States where there’s no one but me and no relatives nearby, it was then I emphasized on the importance of respecting your own space, and being in control of your finances regardless if you’re part of a crowd of millenials who lives extravagantly.
Being in control teaches you to explore your options, be more strategic on your decisions and be more empowered on how Adulting is in a city filled with a fast-paced environment where dreams, goals and ambitions are made. It was also the soft launch of Ayala’s first ever co-living space called The Flats.
August 2018 Birthday Month
And, for the first time in a long time. I didn’t have any anxiety issues and only had but a grateful heart with all that has transpired throughout the year.
It was 243 days since I jumped into entrepreneurship.
Jumping into entrepreneurship has been the most challenging yet the most fulfilling and rewarding venture I have ever got into to date. And, to be speaking in hotels, having to switch places from being the hotelier watching and witnessing one banquet event happen to another; Having to work for and in the hotel industry will always bring back to memories I will always treasure – my roots of becoming ‘all around girl’ were all because of the service industry.
In the photo, Francis and I were situated at the hotel restaurant, working on the final touches of our presentations and deliverables.
Being invited to speak, more so, having to share the plenary with a good friend, makes this entrepreneurial journey even more exciting. The Unapologetic Dude, Francis Miranda (one of the originals of The After Six Club) and I shared our journey as entrepreneurs and why you, the YOUpreneurs shouldn’t be apologetic on pursuing your passion, embracing your ambition and to actually take action.
On Local and International Partnerships
On my birthday, while the Country Manager was still in Europe having a vacation; I had a good Linkedin conversation with him which lead to a meeting of possibilities in August 10.
As a small player in the big pond, I have big dreams as the startup progressed from having to mount events from one location after another, we were given the privilege to also mount community events not just in the metro but also in the nearby countries – Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia to name a few.
Talk I had at Lyceum University (Masters of Hospitality).
‘The Hospitality Industry is the best training ground for entrepreneurship. You’ll know, someday’ words which GM Jim Boyles told me on my first week of duty at my last hospitality stint. And, GM Grant Ray Jefferies shared before we all parted.
Indeed, it is. The history of the hotel Industry came from entrepreneurial ventures, where innovation didn’t need skyrocket ideas but from the need of belongingness, inclusivity, comfort and respite.
It’s an industry where patience, resilience and grit is being honed. It includes creativity to answer a need, people to operate, and teamwork to make everything run.
It’s practically entrepreneurship altogether. What we need aren’t cut-throat technology driven add-on’s, what the hospitality industry needs is to be reminded of what our industry meant – collaboration, teamwork, and a culture of togetherness. ‘All for one, one for all’ AI can never replace camaraderie, for sure.
As it was a year filled with many firsts. My first international Linkedin master class was held and taught in Mongolia as an Independent Linkedin Trainer during the inaugural Social Media Week in Ulaabataar, Mongolia and we were able to launch #LinkedUB as the Linkedinlocal counterpart for intellectual and learning meetups.
We are Engaged and I am about to get married to my neighbor, birthday-mate and best friend.
It took time before it sunk in but it happened, it’s happening. We’re going to tie the knot next year.
It has been a roller-coaster year but he managed to brighten up all the stress into something more to look forward to. Honestly, I don’t know how he was able to keep up with me knowing I’m a ball of energy.
Being able to share tactics and strategies on how to leverage on Linkedin and social media platforms definitely helped more people open their eyes on other ways to sell beyond the usual flyering and cold-calling. It was also a privilege to have been able to speak at Belle de jour’s launch which also brought more possibilities, engagements and built strong ties for more projects in 2019.
A dialogue and exchange of thoughts is far much better once you’re teamed up with friends in the same panel and I’m also glad to have been able to share the floor with one of the best eventologists in the country – Stephen Ku, Gigi Bautista of GBA Events Asia, RJ Ledesma of Mercato and Luis Arcangel of Montgomery & Fitch Associates.
It was also the same month wherein I was challenged on accomplishing my obligations. I was having on and off fever, colds and aches but I still pursued as committed. I attended and hosted Globe MyBusiness and pursued Top Voices Malaysia.
The past 2 months have been the most hectic & overwhelming. When the rollercoaster of feeling down happens, I always look back at the faces and milestones the team have achieved, braved and the community we’ve formed.
As commitments were scheduled ahead & I have always been true to my word; I still woke, stood & gave my 100% in every opportunity. I slept in every chance I was given, still gave my health the care it needed & as I faced every task, I couldn’t help but feel even more grateful & blessed to have been able to wake up everyday to do what I love without complaining. I’m amazed when a few hours before I was nursing myself, next thing I know, the disposition changes each time I’m already on stage and about to face the crowd.
And, I wish the same thing for you.
It made me realize & reminded that the culture & mission of the startup we’re operating is something I wish we can also impart for others to have – to wake up happy, face every challenges with a smile, & to never waste a day complaining over their boss, the work they’d have to do & embrace challenges as an opportunity to grow & further help others, too.
I can’t believe I met Vishen Lakhiani.
Just right after I shared for the world to know that he’s one of the idols whom I’d like to call as distant mentor; I met him in flesh just few hours before the release of the newspaper release and was able to experience the Mindvalley culture.
I have yet to write the Mindvalley experience, I’m honestly still lost for words. It’s funny how I want to say a lot but I still can’t come up with the right words to say on how the visit at their new HQ went, and still feels like I have so much to share?
One thing’s for sure, this has been one of the top highlights for me for the entire year and I am grateful with how the entire year have turned out or else the opportunity may have not had happened.
I believe in the power of the universe and its manifestations, it took several attempts and missed opportunities yet it brought to so much greater and I’m already excited for the year ahead.
The month of November was also all about feeling a new sense of independence, peace and abundance. I transferred to a new place away from my comfort zone and decided to have my own pad where I can zone in and have the much needed rest (as much as I can bank on)
It’s been the best decision yet. The expenses were managed more than then, and I get to bank more sleep and more work done than braving the traffic day-in and day-out.
SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK (Philippines)
It takes an entire village to make something big happen. I am all for paying it forward. When our friends from Montgomery + Fitch Associates called for support, we delivered. And, together with the community of The After Six Club, we made the inaugural Social Media Week happen in the Philippines. We’re looking forward for next year’s, scheduled on September 2019.
It was an amazing experience for us as it’s also the first time, few of the key players and partners of the startup were able to share a panel of thoughts encouraging more people to #embraceambition as they take action on making their dreams and goals happen.
Mounted in 5 days, we were able to welcome travel vlogger and Deanna, Drew’s girlfriend to a Manila Meet-up where vloggers, bloggers and travel enthusiasts gathered as one for a night of networking and inspiration. We welcomed close to 300 interested meetup attendees and were attended with approximately 120 people including the volunteers, sponsors and tenants of MyTown Dormitories.
The key take-away of the meet up is that, community collaboration truly exists. And, this event proved how responsive people are with genuine intent.
As we #embraceambition, we should take action. However, not all of us are blessed, privileged and surrounded by optimistic and encouraging environment. Together with Viviamo Inc (Belle de jour planner), we want to spark the conversation to start talking about dreams and making them happen.
We learned in a survey by The Project of Dreams that 7 out of 10 Filipinos don’t have a dream and it’s not because they don’t have but rather because they are discouraged from having one or on pursuing them.
As we transition to a brand new year, December, the month of gift giving and family togetherness; this has got to be the highlight of the year and in fulfillment of all efforts for 2019.
BIG THANK YOU 2018
Somehow, I am not yet ready to let go of the wonderful year despite the numerous challenges and learnings. However, because of those challenges and learnings, it brought us into what is yet to become 2019’s highlights. The team of 2 is now a strong lean team of 9 heads and it’s been an amazing ride.
Thank you also to Rice Bowl Awards and VIA: Startup Summit for considering us as a Finalist and Nominee. Having been listed is already a big win for our humble start-up and we will strive to help the communities more in the coming years.
Thank you to all of our clients and partners, collaborators, supporters and the community who have joined us this year. We do look forward to more awesome experiences with you!
