Let’s Dream Together by having Braver Goals.
I believe that the universe listens but you’ll have to really want it for it to manifest.
The want overlaps the need and you can feel it in every bone of your body when you really want something. There’s this certain drive, hunger and internal pressure that makes you extra persistent to achieve. It’s that want which will not need anyone else to push you – it’s that innate doing making you more than willing to do whatever it takes. And, it doesn’t feel like work, either. Everyday is like a step closer to that goal and you’ll have all these hard, annoying and challenging moments but all those are worth it because in every effort and step that you take, it’s getting you closer to the goal.
That goal? makes everything sweeter as you see, smell and feel it. And, if you haven’t felt this kind? Maybe your goal isn’t big enough.
When I first started our startup, The After Six Club, the goal was merely because there are so much more that I wanted to learn and for someone who just transitioned back to freelancing, I don’t have all the cash to burn for me to invest on. As a firm believing of lifelong learning, I turned again into being resourceful and spoke to those whom I want to learn from and learn with. I also wanted to still surround myself with thought-leaders, experts and professionals. I had so much frustrations in the corporate world, I wanted to build a company where culture comes first then the profit comes in next.
At that time, it was a completely crazy goal that seemed impossible but having to know that it was THAT CRAZY, deliberated and conclude that it was AMBITIOUS. I made do with what I can, what was remaining from my savings and pursued.
I wanted to define, create, mold and build a company with a culture of collaboration and togetherness, of strengths and weaknesses, of sharpening and honing of crafts, for others and profit. I wanted it so bad, I could almost taste it, and I was determined to do whatever it took to make tis crazy dream a reality.
It’s still a work-in-progress filled with trial and errors, getting to know people and meeting new acquaintances.
Everyday since January 2018, I started getting up and built a new routine
- 10 minutes staring at the ceiling to start the day calm.
- Give myself 1-3minutes to meditate to get me in the zone through Headspace
- Arrange and fix the bed to make sure I don’t hop back in for snooze time.
- 10-20minutes to write down my tasks, eureka moments or notes that I may need to do or remembered.
I took advantage of my capability to nap whenever I can to recharge, work on the website (Yes, originally, it was only me who was doing all the website creation), took every weekend and every spare moment to write down my goals, where I want the business to go, executed in-between to validate, validate and validate.
And, when I wasn’t working on anything that has to do with the business, I was occupied on learning everything I could, researching on new online trends, SEO to social media to how to actually generate revenue.
You become the jack and jill of all trades and I’m glad to have been able to learn as much, in order for me to delegate properly.
As much as it seems like I’m always on a high. I’ve got to admit, it can be exhausting. There will always be recurring challenges, downsides and frustrations but you press on. There are times when friends would see me as someone who’s ‘always working’ and I always have ‘work with me wherever’ but, I just smile through it and think of it positively that they see me as someone who’s working and crushing on my goals. My parents won’t seem to understand why I’m spending so much time working yet the revenue doesn’t equate as much as how my corporate used to compensate me.
It never made sense for some, but it made a whole ton of sense to me.
It’s funny how I am living the life, building my dreams and working on my goals and yet I didn’t get nearly enough sleep, I had no life and I have been consumed by all the tasks on my to do list.
You see, even though it was challenging, hard, frustrating and painful; to me, the effort was worth every sacrifice because for the first time, in a long time, I can see the vision unfolding right before my eyes, even if no one else could at that time.
From what seemed to be just a way for me to go for classes and meet-ups I wanted to attend and surround myself with, The After Six Club, is now a full-fledged business where innovation and pivots kept on recurring and boy, it exceeded the crazy idea into so much more.
It’s just the beginning.
It’s true, one you achieved one crazy goal, all these other crazy goals will keep on recurring and everything else will feel like nothing is impossible. New dreams keeps me thirsty and hungry for more, having to achieve one new milestone after another keeps me jumping out of bed before dawn every day, and I hold a much grateful heart with regards to the people I meet and those whom I want to serve.
The business from being ME became a WE, transitioned into WITH THEM now.
Whether you’re a solopreneur, entrepreneur, blogger or any sort of business owner whether working-at-home or stay-at-home mom, you might think that setting ‘reasonable’ and ‘doable’ goals is the way to go since it feels safe and practical — you’re thinking it all wrong.
Think of possibilities, break it down into chunks. Thinking small won’t get you anywhere as it won’t motivate you nor drive you to reach greater heights. You have to make it big enough that it’ll make you feel scared. These fears will ignite that spark of courage and determination, it will be the one that’ll move and lives inside you.
A recent study done among Filipino youth showed 7 out of 10 teenagers don’t have a dream.
The study covered 614 Filipino teenagers from different socioeconomic classes across the country. They were asked to answer the question “Do you have a dream in life?”
Their answers showed that not having a dream is not directly connected to one’s socioeconomic class. The most common reasons for not having a dream is lack of passion, lack of self-esteem, discouraging words from others, lack of opportunity, and lastly, poverty.
Isn’t disturbing, frustrating and would make you feel so upset on not being able to contribute and help others? As we realised this, together with the ladies of Belle de jour power planners, we, The After Six Club teamed up to act on this cause.
If we can’t solve poverty, at least, we can help ignite a huge spark to those who needs it and make people aware that throwing out discouraging words won’t do any good. We need to fuel ourselves with hope and contribution.
For us to make this endeavor come to life, we featured women entrepreneurs and dream-catchers who made their goals, wishes and dreams happen against all odds and challenges.
Ultimately, after listening to everyone’s stories, what we realized is that all these women empowered themselves with the drive for a better life and to live in the biggest possible way, gave themselves the choice to block of all the negativity, filtered the toxic people surrounding them and proved them what was right to which have made the naysayers tell themselves they were wrong to discourage.
It all starts with writing down the goal and the willingness to make them real. Once it feels real to you, all the next steps and decisions are made necessary to make those goals happen.
As we ushered the new year, I started reading a new book to fuel and educate me more. Continuing the goal from last year to read at least 5 Personal Development or Transformational Books, I’m being true to its promise and started with SMARTER, FASTER, BETTER by Charles Duhigg, the same author of the best-selling book Power of Habits.
Albeit I haven’t finished the book as of writing, I wanted to share what I learned about setting goals. As much as setting “SMART” goals (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time-Bound), you’d have to add on the critical element to make the exercise effective.
You’d have to add the STRETCH GOAL.
What is a Stretch Goal? It’s the process on thinking BIG and working on it backwards for us to avoid spending hours on unimportant tasks because it feels good to check them off our list.
We’ll have to always zoom-in towards the BIG PICTURE for us to focus 100% of our attention on accomplishing the biggest, most important task at any given time.
Sounds easy? I realized on how much I fell on this trap myself too. With all the notifications we receive, new appointments popping in our calendar and life in-between; everything seems to fall as urgent and important. We fall for the day-to-day grind instead of making ourselves productive, walking and working towards the BIG GOAL.
So, before you start back on the daily grind of things. Re-align yourself on what the BIG GOAL and the BIG PICTURE is and break it down according to the SMART strategy and execute tactics accordingly.
Remember: BIG GOALS GET BIG RESULTS while small goals get small results. What you will become is what you can become, and the bigger and scarier the goal is, the more chance you will have for big success.
Again, it’s not going to be easy but once you hit the mindset of making possibilities happen; all these will transform into magical experiences and outcomes.
